What drug testing panels do employers in Virginia look for?

For DOT-regulated employers, the required drug test panel is the DOT 5 panel drug test. For all other employers, a standard 5 panel drug test is most often used. This can be a lab-based test or a rapid drug screen.

For either of the above, the 5 panel drug test detects metabolites from the following drugs:

  • Marijuana/Cannabis (THC)
  • Cocaine (COC)
  • Phencyclidine (PCP)
  • Amphetamines (AMP), which includes Methamphetamine and Ecstasy
  • Opiates (OPI) including 6-Acetylmorphine (6-AM, a Metabolite of Heroin), Morphine, Codeine, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Hydromorphone, and Oxymorphone

For nonregulated or Non-DOT drug testing, some employers consider testing for additional drugs, often using the 10 panel drug test. The10 panel drug test includes the drugs in the 5 panel test plus Benzodiazepines, Barbiturates, Propoxyphene, Methadone, and Methaqualone (Quaaludes).

For any drug-testing panel for nonregulated employers, it is always best to specify expanded opiates for the opiate category to insure your drug-testing panel includes all of the opiate testing—6-Acetylmorphine (6-AM, a metabolite of Heroin), Morphine, Codeine, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Hydromorphone, and Oxymorphone.

The Virginia law on drug testing for employers in the mining industry specifies a 10 panel drug test, but this 10 panel does not include Methaqualone (Quaaludes). The 10 panel test specified for mining employers in Code of Virginia § 45.2-565. Duties of operators lists the following drugs: Amphetamines, Cannabinoids/THC, Cocaine; Opiates, PCP, Benzodiazepines, Propoxyphene, Methadone, Barbiturates, and Synthetic narcotics.

“Synthetic narcotics” refer to the expanded opiates listed above.

What specimens are used in Virginia for employee drug testing?

Primarily urine specimens are used in Virginia for employee drug testing. For DOT required testing currently urine is the only specimen allowed. Urine specimen drug testing has been around since the early 1980’s and is reliable and accurate.

Hair drug testing also called hair follicle drug testing is available for non-regulated employers and becoming more popular. Oral fluid drug testing is fairly new and has a detection window near time of use to about 2 or 3 days. Not readily available for online ordering or scheduling at drug testing facilities in Virginia, oral fluid drug test specimen collections are typically performed in house by an employer representative.

Can employers in Virginia test for Marijuana?

Fentanyl use is on a sharp rise in America. Some employers in Virginia have the option to add fentanyl to their drug-testing panel. A professional drug-testing third-party administrator can assist employers with determining the correct panel of drugs to test for.

For DOT-regulated employers, fentanyl is currently not included on the DOT 5-panel drug test. The DOT has issued a notice of a proposed rule to add fentanyl to the DOT panel. This process could take up to a year.
