Are Drug Testing Facilities Open During COVID-19 Shutdown

So, you need a drug test, why?

  • Getting a new job
  • Required random drug test for your job
  • Required return to duty or follow up testing for your job
  • Probation or court ordered
  • Many other reasons

So where can you get a drug test done?  Are drug testing facilities open for business during the COVID-19 shutdowns?  Are drug testing facilities essential business functions?

The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued guidance on continued required drug testing.  Various DOT agencies have issued similar guidance and referenced the DOT guidance.  These agencies include the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Pipeline Hazard Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

In all cases, the guidance is that DOT regulated drug & alcohol testing should continue.

Besides DOT regulated employers, there are many other essential service employers operating and in need of employment drug testing during these times.  Drug testing providers are an essential business.

So, most drug testing facilities in the United States are open for business collecting specimens for drug testing.  In some cases, breath alcohol testing has been suspended but there is the option of a saliva swab alcohol test that is primarily administered by the donor.

Facilities that are doing COVID-19 testing are not doing drug testing.  The major lab’s Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp operate patient service centers (PSC) for drug testing and these PSC centers do not perform COVID-19 testing.  Both Quest Diagnostics and LabCorp have issued announcements regarding availability for drug testing.

It is our strong recommendation that before going for a drug test, you must first have a Custody & Control Form (CCF) or electronic order (Donor Pass) in your possession.  Secondly, call the collection facility ahead of time to verify availability and hours of operation.  Finally, we strongly suggest you make an appointment with Quest Diagnostics or Labcorp.  Note that an appointment will not be valid if you do not have a previous order for the testing.  Again, without a CCF form or Donor Pass you will not receive drug testing services at the PSC facilities.

Drug testing facilities are open for business.  The Drug and Alcohol Testing Industry conducts diagnostic services as a key function of operations for the United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) regulated employers and private employers. Accordingly, those operating in the drug and alcohol testing industry are required to report to work based on the needs of services provided in this essential capacity.
