Testing For Unknown Substances

Testing For Unknown Substances, also called an unknown drug scan, is used to identify drugs in a hair or urine specimen. This test is often utilized when some believes that they may have been drugged or don’t know what they have been given. This test can identify a variety of such as Marijuana, Sympathomimetic amines, Cocaine, Opiates/Opioids, Hallucinogens, Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Hypnotics/Sedatives, Antidepressants, Antihistamines, Antitussive/Expectorants, Muscle relaxants, Anticonvulsants, Diuretics, Anesthetics, Anabolic Steroids, and others.

For date rape cases or situations when you may have been drugged, you can add Gamma Hydroxybutyric Acid (GHB) to the drug test panel as this is sometimes used in these types of situations. You should be aware that GHB also is naturally occurring in the body so if detected, the results may indicate the levels are within the naturally occurring parameters. Unknow Substance Testing is best conducted using a hair specimen as that can look back 3-6 months. The hair should be collected a minimum of 30 days (or longer) after the time of incident or ingestion as it takes longer for drugs to metabolize into the hair.

A urine specimen may also be used but only if collected very close to the time or the incident. It will only detect drugs for approximately 10 – 20 hours and should be collected in the first void after the incident.

As to GHB, since it is naturally occurring in the body and one time use is difficult to detect, labs rarely finding positive results for GHB, so you can save some money if you don’t request this additional option.

When you suspect date rape, you likely don’t know which drug or drugs you may have been given. The unknown substance test with the GHB test will help you determine which drugs were given to you. Our specialty lab – Expertox will provide high quality analytical results. This lab is regulated by CLIA, CAP, and ISO/IEC 17025:2017. These tests are designed with a zero-detection limit which means it can test for smaller amounts of substances that may have metabolized into your hair.

The turnaround time to get back results on the unknown substances test is typically about 15 business days from the time the lab receives the specimen. The turnaround time to get back results on the GHB testing is about the same. For these tests, the results of your drug test will be reported as “For Clinical Use Only.” These test results will not be available for legal purposes unless you purchase a separate litigation package. This can be done after you receive the results, so you only have to spend the money on this package if you need it for legal purposes. Our lab results are not authorized for criminal proceedings.

As to results, every individual metabolizes substances at a different rate and therefore results can vary greatly depending how much was ingested at time of incident as well as the persons age, weight, overall health, etc. Also, there could potentially be products that come from other countries and/or purchased on the internet that may not be detected in these comprehensive panels.

Specimens are collected by certified collectors (a minimum of 30 days after the incident date for hair specimens) and will be sent to the laboratory with a Chain of Custody Form (CCF). The results typically report out in about 15 business days from the time the specimen is received at the lab and will be signed off by a clinical scientist to verify that the results are true and accurate.
