National Drug Screening operates in all area of the United States, in all States including Hawaii and Alaska.  Our National Drug Screen centers are open daily and available for immediate drug and alcohol testing.  All types of drug and alcohol testing is available in Hawaii including court ordered drug testing, drug testing for probation, parents testing their teenagers for drugs and personal drug testing.

If you need a hair drug test in Hawaii, our national drug screen centers can assist you. With one phone call we can arrange your drug testing for next day service.

Our drug screening process can detect Cannabinoids (THC), Cocaine, Methadone, Methaqualone, Opioids (Codeine, Morphine, Heroin, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, etc.), Barbiturates, Amphetamines (including Methamphetamine), Benzodiazepines, Buprenorphine, Phencyclidine (PCP), Propoxyphene, Synthetic cannabinoids (K2, Spice), Bath Salts and more.

Employers in Hawaii can drug test applicants and employees, certain rules must be followed.  These must be advance notice in writing of a drug testing policy and each and every drug test.  The donor for the workplace drug testing must receive a written statement of all of the specific drugs to be tested.  The applicant or employee for the drug test must also receive a written statement that over the counter drugs or prescription medications can cause a positive drug test.  Typically in Hawaii the drugs to be tested for in workplace drug testing include: Marijuana, Cocaine, Amphetamines, Opiates, Phencyclidine, Barbiturates, Methaqualone, Benzodiazepines, Propoxyphene, Methadone, Alcohol; and any other controlled substances in chapter 329, Hawaii Revised Statutes, and approved by the director.

Screening cutoff levels for workplace testing in Hawaii are different than normal screening cut off levels seen through the United States.  Alcohol level is 0.05, initial cut off for marijuana is 100 ng/ml and the initial cut off screening level if opiates is 300 g/ml.

Strict specimen collection procedures must be followed for workplace drug testing in Hawaii, these closely follow the DOT and DHHS urine specimen collection guidelines.  Laboratories conducting drug testing in Hawaii must be licensed and are strictly regulated.  All results typically go from the laboratory to the Medical Review Officer (MRO).  The role of the Medical Review Officer (MRO) is to rule out that the positive drug test results was not caused by over the counter medication or legal prescription drugs.  The medical review officer reviewing testing in Hawaii must be licensed as an MRO in Hawaii.

Employers in Hawaii should have a drug free workplace policy that includes post accident drug testing.  An employee testing positive after an accident may be faced with denial of the workers compensation claim.  Haw. Rev. Stat. §386-3 states:  (b) No compensation shall be allowed for an injury incurred by an employee by the employee’s willful intention to injure oneself or another by actively engaging in any non-work related physical altercation other than in self- defense, or by the employee’s intoxication.

Hawaii also has a medical marijuana law.   The medical marijuana law in Hawaii protects employers and does require an employer to allow the use of marijuana in the workplace and the use of medical marijuana at work is specifically prohibited.  The law states that the authorization for the medical use of marijuana is this section shall not apply to medical use of marijuana in the workplace of one’s employment.

Employers in Hawaii need to be careful to not implement a drug testing program without consultation from a professional expert on drug testing and state drug testing laws in Hawaii.  Any drug free workplace implemented in Hawaii should be implemented with strict attentions to the state law on drug testing.

Point of Collection Testing (POCT) or On-site testing is allowed in Hawaii. The on-site drug testing devices must be approved by the FDA. The collector administering the point of collection drug test must be trained on the device being used and the collector must follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the device.  For non-negative results the specimen must be sent to a laboratory for confirmation testing and subsequent review by a medical review officer (MRO).

HRS Chapter 392B establishes standard requirements for workplace testing procedures for Hawaii employers.  Hawaii employers are required to follow state law with respect to pre-employment and employment drug testing.  Observed collections are not advised for non-regulated workers.
